SydJS events

Each month, SydJS meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. Except for when we don’t. This means we don’t meet on Valentine’s Day. And this year we definitely didn't. But we can still pick up on the vibe. And we do that by showing a little love back to our amazing hosts, Atlassian.

Each year we honour our hosts with an annual Atlassian take-over of SydJS!

It's a tradition that we're lucky to have, as it means we get to see some of the great talent that has made Atlassian the company it is today.

And this year we're looking forward to hearing from some new presenters to the SydJS stage, as well as a long time friend of SydJS: Caterina.

Additionally, Sam Leatherdale — who helps us out each month — has gone above and beyond to extend the lineup and we’ll get a taste of Atlassian’s finest.

To borrow a value from Atlassian, at the end of the night, you'll be one step closer to Being the Change You Seek.

At the start of each year in January, SydJS reflects on the year behind us, and prepares for the year ahead.

To help this, we have a speaker that's already presented for us, and speaker that epitomises the prospects that lie ahead.

This year we're lucky to have a surprise speaker from the frontline of Atlassian who'll be returning with their top shelf presentation style we hope you caught in 2024. But we can't say more than that. They'll be representing the strong foundation that SydJS has that allows us to look forward to an even stronger future.

And that future will be represented by Andrew Morris. Andrew may be new to our lectern, but he's not new to JavaScript and making deep insights. He'll be talking about “mpc-framework: A framework that makes MPC easy in TypeScript.”

Andrew will show us how you can choose from multiple existing circuit generators and MPC backends, or create your own.

What could be better to show us the way ahead in 2025?

Last month saw Web Directions Developer Summit showed Sydney — and all Australian Developers — what it is to be a world leading conference for the people building the Web.

This month at SydJS we have two of Summit's presenters reprising their sessions that helped make Summit the conference it is.

Whether you're presenting, attending, or watching online, Summit has content to captivate and inspire.

Come along and see Atlassian's very own Matt Colman and Erin Zimmer. They're not to be missed!

Matt will introduce us to Building an AI team when no one knows anything about AI, and Erin will show us how to achieve Dependency Injection with React Context.

In addition to two great presentations, this will be our last SydJS for 2024, so come along and celebrate. RSVP today!

October is going to be huge at SydJS? HUGE! HUGE, even.

We took a break last month to reset, refresh, and reinvigorate, and it's gotten us even more keen than usual.

This month — and going forward — will be leaner and more focused, and the primary goal of introducing amazing content will be even more ... primary?

And more interestingly this month is that with so much change, we wanted to add in some consistency, and that's coming via our speakers. August's lineup was great and what's even better is that two of them have agreed to come back.

If you missed Joshua Crowley building a local-first voice assistant or Max Bo explaining how an HTML file is all you need, you're in luck as they're back this month to reprise those presentations.

And if you were lucky enough to catch them last month, join us again, meet more of the community and sample more of Atlassian's exceptional hospitality.

It’s been a minute since many of us visited Twitter; or since many of us visited it the way we used to. But when Simon Swiss put out a call for speakers there, the response was encouraging.

Not just for us, but surely for Elon as well. Wednesday’s speaker lineup has some real X factor.

We’ve got first time speakers and long time friends of SydJS who’ve volunteered their time to bring you their views on where they’ve been investigating JavaScript.

And it won’t just be the speakers getting involved. Our first speaker has asked that you bring along a laptop to do some live coding yourself.

The Atlassian chairs might not spin round, but Wednesday’s talks will surely turn around how you look at JavaScript.

The community’s got talent; time to voice your opinions on your favourite language!

Each year we try to bring you a taste of the great Web Directions CODE event that's held in Melbourne. This year's event was on June 20 and 21, and from all accounts it raised the bar yet again.

And this year we've been lucky to secure two speakers from the event to whet your appetite — not just for Web Directions CODE next year, but also Web Directions SUMMIT in November.

We'll hear from:

• Julian Burr with A Look At Modern Web APIs You Might Not Know, and
• Ben Taylor with his New Wave of JavaScript: A Taxonomy of Runtimes and their Web-interoperability

Then only thing that can make the night better will be having you there also.

And speaking of there: we'll be back at 363 George Street on the newly renovated Level 29.

And we're back to our regular 3rd Wednesday of the month, so we'll see you next week.

This month Apple joined Microsoft and Google, and announced they'll be releasing AI. We're glad to see them join the push for the future of technology, but we think we're pushing also. But we're not putting everything behind AI.

We're pushing GI. Genuine Intelligence.

At our June meeting we'll have the pleasure of two speakers showcasing different facets of scripting. And both of them have bet fully on their approach.

Our first speaker adopted TypeScript for both their Frontend and Backend needs. Their Frontend code and tests were successful. Their Backend tests were not as great. We'll learn how they're changing their approach and see where they've seen successes and setbacks.

Our second speaker's company used JavaScript at every opportunity: Frontend, Backend, Databases, RPC, Infrastructure, Scripting, Tooling, Mobile Apps. Everything. And they've had some great success. And learnt a lot. And we'll get to learn from their experience.

Artificial Intelligence. Apple Intelligence. Genuine Intelligence.

We might not have a cat playing a guitar, but we'll have great speakers helping us acquire and apply knowledge and skills. And that's the real intelligence.

We don’t always meet on the 4th Wednesday of the month, but when we do it’s next level.

And this month we ARE meeting on the 4th Wednesday of the month, and it WILL be next level.

We’ve had some great speakers volunteer this month, and one I might have had to ask to volunteer, but it’s all the same behind the microphone.

If you've made it to a SydJS this year, you know we've been listening to you. We've been getting feedback, and we've been working on that feedback. Thankfully — given our strong community and equally strong sponsors — that feedback has largely been positive and that's made working on the feedback so much easier.

From meeting one this year, we've been reaching out to the community and this is our first meeting where that's paying off. One of your colleagues in the community said they wanted to talk about Developer feedback, and we listened. We're building an evening around their idea.

We'll be joined by a long time friend of SydJS who'll reprise a presentation about how working with GraphQL can improve the feedback from a REST API and what gains can be made.

They'll be joined by a new friend of SydJS, and they'll be introducing us to how they've used a REPL to dramatically improve their Developer Experience. If you've used jsFiddle or CodePen, you've had a taste for what a REPL can do for you and your workflow.

Let's keep the feedback flowing!

The SydJS community is lucky to have been around long enough to have created a number of traditions. As the language has changed, our traditions have given us points of trust that have allowed us to grow and flourish.

One of those traditions is that in the Valentine's month, we turn the microphone over to out hosts, Atlassian, and showcase just a few of the teams that makes Atlassian the success it's known for.

Join us and Atlassian's Lachlan Hunt as he introduces some of the focus his colleagues share, and that you'll see reflected in the Atlassian product suite.

We hope you can join us to build even stronger traditions.

‘Twas the third Wednesday of the month and all across Syd, the Developers were stirring, just like JS did

No, I’m not really sure why the JavaScript was stirring, but it rhymed and that a grand start.

And the other grand start is that SydJS is starting up again in 2023.

If you can make the first meeting back, and can make the whole evening, we’d love to see you there.

We’ll be starting a little smaller than we used to, but will take our lead from you and will grow as we need.
